Surfing Scotland: Sixty years of surfing in the cold water kingdom

The surfers of Scotland are resilient and determined individuals, hardened to the piercing cold and vicious winds, yet warm and welcoming in character, with ready smiles and an irrepressible sense of humour, albeit it a dark one at times! As individuals who are lucky enough to have been involved from the beginning, we felt the time was right, sixty years on, to celebrate these characteristics, capture for posterity the halcyon early days of Scottish surfing, and muse upon its future. Through the various chapters we endeavour to illustrate and underscore the factors that have shaped the development of the Scottish character and its imprint upon those who surf in this frigid North Atlantic bastion, and through the surfers’ own words, we offer a perspective on the rich and varied range of locations that, over the decades, have forged the surfers of Caledonia, the cold-water kingdom.
